Grand Rapids Housing Commission to open Section 8 waiting list - MLive.com

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — The Grand Rapids Housing Commission is opening the waiting list for its Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program, which provides a rental subsidy for low-income households.

In a news release, the commission said the waitlist will open on Dec. 9 through Dec. 11. Residents must apply online at GRHClist.com or by calling (616) 426-2840. Applications will not be accepted in person. The commission said it’s working with community agencies to help sign up people with disabilities and language barriers, as well as those who don’t have a phone or internet access.

“We want to stress that the open application period gives low-income households the opportunity to be added to our Section 8 waiting list,” GRHC Executive Director Carlos Sanchez said in a statement. “Applying to the program does not guarantee a place on the waiting list, nor does securing a place on the list ultimately guarantee that the applicant will receive Section 8.”

Once access to the waiting list is closed, the commission will draw 2,000 names through a randomized computer lottery, and those individuals will be added to the waiting list. An applicant can receive a Section 8 voucher when his or her name reaches the top of the waiting list, a process that can take several years, Sanchez said.

To qualify for Section 8, residents must meet specific income requirements. For a four-person household, for example, maximum household income cannot exceed $38,300, according to the housing commission. For a one-person household, maximum income cannot exceed $26,850.

“It’s unfortunate that demand for Section 8 vouchers far exceeds the number of vouchers we have available,” Sanchez said, “However, we are pleased that we will now be able to open the Section 8 Program to 2,000 additional families. The Housing Commission will continue to work with HUD and our community partners to narrow the gap between affordable housing demand and supply in our community.”

The housing commission administers 3,459 Section 8 vouchers.

Under the Section 8 program, residents pay 30 percent of their income toward their rent, and the Section 8 program covers the rest.
