West Seneca Town Supervisor Sheila Meegan still had her sense of humor on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2014, and that was no easy task. Her community already had 78 inches of snow over three days.
Now the residents of her flood-prone town were wondering what would happen to their homes when the snow pack collided with rain and predicted temperatures of 60 degrees or higher, making the snow on roofs heavier and more of a threat to cause collapse.
And, by the way, high winds that had the potential to down power lines and trees and take out power were expected to arrive on Monday.
“I’m just waiting for the locusts,” she said.
At that point, a biblical plague didn’t seem so far-fetched.
With the lake-effect snowfall now firmly in the region’s rearview mirror, the weapons of choice turned from shovels and snowplows to sump pumps and sandbags – even boats - in anticipation of what was expected to be a melt-off of epic proportions. Some communities in the Northtowns that were relatively untouched by the snow now had reason to worry because of the creeks that crisscross the region.
Volunteers poured in from other parts of the state and from other states to help with the cleanup and prepare for whatever came next – and no one was ruling out locusts.
