Pima County waiting for DHS decision on Stonegarden request - KVOA Tucson News

TUCSON – Pima County is seeking an answer as to whether the Department of Homeland Security will use Operation Stonegarden funds for humanitarian aid for asylum seekers.

With a 3-2 vote in May, county supervisors accepted a grant which would use $200,000 of Operation Stonegarden funds for humanitarian aid and in July, the request was turned in to DHS.

DHS has the final say as to whether the money will be used for humanitarian aid for asylum seekers.

Pima County Supervisor Chuck Huckelberry said he has yet to receive a response regarding the request and has been in contact with Senator Kyrsten Sinema, asking for her assistance.

Huckelberry wrote in an email to Sinema that the county has yet to hear any response regarding the OPSG humanitarian aid request and that “based on these facts, it is clear the U.S. Border Patrol has an ideologically bias against the provision of humanitarian aid using OPSG funding.”

U.S. Border Patrol said that they were unable to provide a response at a local level.

Huckelberry said that he thinks Pima County will provide the assistance to asylum seekers, whether or not they are reimbursed.

“For their benefit, for their safety, it’s appropriate that they be housed and transported safely, and that also provides safety for the community at large,” said Huckelberry.

Spokesperson for Sinema, Hannah Hurley, released a statement that said Sinema’s office had a productive conversation with Pima County officials last week and following that conversation, the office contacted U.S. Customs and Border Protection on Pima County’s behalf, and requested that CBP quickly provide the county with an answer regarding the submitted request.

Pima County also reached out to other Arizona state officials, including Representative Raul Grijalva.

Grijalva’s office said they were sending a letter to DHS on Friday.

“Tucson graciously opened its doors to asylum seekers,” said Grijalva, “and I’m happy to help them get the humanitarian funds they requested to continue helping those impacted by President Trump and Stephen Miller’s immigration policies.”
