Glade Valley, N.C. — All the leaves are down. We are now waiting for the first big snow. We may get flurries on Friday, but nothing huge is on the horizon for the next ten days in the North Carolina mountains.
We’ve already had a short but troublesome ice storm that landed a neighbor’s car in a ditch.
It’s not the prettiest time of year in Glade Valley. But even a raw rainy day delivers beauty. I keep looking out my cottage window to monitor the changing view. Clouds are the messengers of mystery.
It’s been an exciting year. We finally finished the first phase of a major landscaping project. We were way over budget but happy with the results. Our landscaper is more of an artist than anything else. We like that.
It seems like we are always scrambling to the beat the clock here. A painting crew is trying to finish up a staining job on our cedar siding. If we could just get a couple of warm and rainless days! It’s usually not good to paint when the temperature dips below 40 degrees.
We keep meeting new and interesting people. We celebrated a neighbor’s birthday last weekend with a delicious dinner at High Meadows Country Club. We met a retired UNC microbiologist and his wife who both volunteer to help improve the quality of life in Alleghany County.
We also drove to neighboring Ashe County for an evening of music at The River House. Wow! What a spectacular concert and dinner with pianist Emile Pandolfi and singer Dana Russell along the New River.
Whenever the snow finally comes to the mountains I promise to send you photos. After anchoring WRAL winter weather coverage for decades I am ready for some playtime in the mountain snow!
