One of the busiest holiday shopping days of the year ended early for one Gresham clothing shop Saturday after a car crashed through a front window, drove through the store and slammed into a wall, police and fire officials said.
No one was hurt when the Ford Crown Victoria careened into the Lane Bryant store. At least two employees were inside at the time of the crash, according to one worker who spoke to Gresham Fire officials.
“I just remember turning around and screaming and running, and I tripped and fell over by our fitting room area,” employee Brooke Larson said in a video released by the Gresham Fire Department. “When I turned around, the car was in the middle of the store.”
Witnesses called 911 to report the crash at the Gresham Station shopping center at 3:35 p.m. Larson said she also called 911 after checking to make sure everyone inside the store was OK.
When emergency crews arrived, they found crushed mannequins and glass shards strewn throughout the store. The car had cut diagonally through the store and came to rest near racks of winter coats and dresses.
“It was a long ways into the store, but thankfully no one was hurt,” said Officer Ben Costigan, a Gresham Police spokesman.
Costigan said the elderly driver of the car mistook the gas pedal for the brake pedal.
Shoppers can park directly in front of the Lane Bryant store and the other shops located near it. A sidewalk separates the stores from the parking spaces.
Gresham Fire officials determined the Lane Bryant store did not suffer any structural damage beyond the shattered windows and cracked drywall. Photos released by the agency show red and gold tinsel still hanging above the window the car careened through.
Police did not release the driver’s name. A relative of the driver arrived and backed the car out of the store with the help of police, fire officials said.
