Empty cages are a rare sight at the Lehigh County Humane Society.
"Reaction has been great. People have been sending us photos of how well the dogs adjusted to their home," said Jackie Folsom of the Humane Society.
The shelter's Home for the Holidays foster campaign has sent half of its pooches into homes. But more than 40 dogs remain, waiting for a foster family to take them home until January 6.
Jarrett Schaffer of Peaceable Kingdom, which is working with the Humane Society, says they have fostered out more than 20 dogs for the holidays.
"Much bigger than anticipated. Had to pull the application down a lot sooner than we thought," said Schaffer.
But Schaffer says a new set of rescues is coming this weekend. Folsom says getting out of the shelter, even for a few weeks, is a much-needed break all dogs need.
"In the case of dogs that have been here for months, it's refreshing for them to get a home to play, toys, lay on the couch. Usually so excited they zip and the house and yard," she said.
Fostering is free and you can still apply on the Lehigh County Humane Society and Peaceable Kingdom websites.
