The New Bloomfield store of Juniata Lumber & Supply will close on Dec. 31. Operations are being consolidated at the Mifflintown store, which will serve both Juniata and Perry counties, company officials said.
“I would like to thank all of our people and everyone for patronizing the store over the years,” said Brenda Kauffman, Juniata Lumber’s general manager.
The closure will mean the layoff of seven employees who received about a month’s notice. Some have found other work or are retiring. The store on Route 34 in Centre Twp. will close at noon on Dec. 31.
“It’s never easy for employees or employers,” Kauffman said. “It wasn’t an easy decision.”
That decision was based on business concerns, including the effect of competition from other construction supply companies in the area and national brands such as Tractor Supply, she said.
The Mifflintown store will not physically expand, but it will serve both counties, Kauffman said. It will take about three months for the company to move its inventory and equipment to Mifflintown, after which the company will sell the New Bloomfield property. Between Dec. 26 and 31, the company will be selling inventory at the store for 50 percent off.
The Mifflintown store will continue to handle special orders and lumber delivery for all clients, she said.
Juniata Lumber has been around for about 60 years selling construction and hardware supplies to mostly commercial clients.
It employs about 12 people. The New Bloomfield store was open for about 30 years.
