With nearly tens of thousands of dollars worth of merchandise stolen from his clothing store over the past month, Alan Gibeley said that prosecutors who go easy on shoplifters — such as Suffolk District Attorney Rachael Rollins — are threatening his business and putting the well-being of his employees at risk.
“The easier shoplifting is, the more people there’ll be trying to do it, and that’s what we’re faced with right now,” said Gibeley, owner of Giblees Menswear & Tuxedos in Danvers. “These people really need to be prosecuted to the fullest to stop it from happening again. If they get off, they’re just going to do it again.”
Gibeley’s shop is in Essex County, but the five shoplifters charged with targeting his shop came from Boston, where he believes Rollins’ no-prosecute list is sending a bad message.
The shoplifters tried to make off with 15 Canada Goose coats from his store Thursday morning, each valued from $950 to $1,200. But employees saw what was happening, intervened and the thieves only managed to get away with one coat.
One of Gibeley’s employees was shoved into a wall and was hit in the face with a clothing hanger, while other sales associates chased the suspects into the parking lot, according to the police report.
“The first thing I yelled was, ‘They’re going for the Goose!’” said Gibeley’s sister Alison, who was working the register when she realized what was happening. “It was awful, I really thought my brother was going to get hurt.”
It was the third time in the past two weeks that his store was hit by shoplifters, according to the police report. Gibeley said he lost around $40,000 worth of coats in the previous two shoplifting incidents and would have lost another $14,000 had the suspects had gotten away with all 15 coats Thursday.
After chasing the suspects out of the store Thursday, Gibeley was able to snap a photograph of the getaway vehicle’s license plate, which cops used to track down the suspects in Lynn, according to the police report.
Bryon Vaughn, 23, of Dorchester, Kashawnii Roumo-O’Brien, 20, of Mattapan, Adriana James, 23, of Jamaica Plain, Lynasja Trimble, 20, of Mattapan, and Mekeda McKenzie, 19, of Dorchester all face charges in Essex County of larceny over $1,200. James, Vaugh and Trimble were also charged with assault and battery on a person over 65.
They were arraigned at Salem District Court Friday and were released on cash bail. They are due back in court on Jan. 31.
Since Rollins was elected last year, she has made headlines for vowing not to prosecute people in Boston who commit 15 different “minor” crimes, including shoplifting.
Gibeley said the idea of allowing adult shoplifters to get away with stealing his products without punishment is disrespectful to local businesses and harmful to the economy.
“If they’re under the age of 18, maybe their brains aren’t quite developed and you can give them a break,” Gibeley said. “But if you’re over 18 and you’re still doing these types of things, then it’s time that you get what you deserve.”
A spokeswoman for Rollins said, “Danvers is not in Suffolk County. I recommend you reach out to the Essex DA’s Office. District Attorney Rollins is focused on serious and violent crimes that occur in Suffolk County.”
In May, a career criminal who was arrested for shoplifting $126 worth of goods from a Stop & Shop in Norfolk County, referring to Rollins’ policy, told the Herald, “It’s not a crime, I thought. I saw it on TV when I was in prison.”
