Michigan post office waiting for identification of odor - Grand Forks Herald

MICHIGAN, N.D. -- The Michigan post office remains closed as the origin of a foul odor continues to be under investigation.

The U.S. Postal Service closed the post office in the town of 275 people about 70 miles west of Grand Forks on Saturday, Jan. 4, after a strong odor permeated the room in the Michigan Mall that houses the post office.

Postal patrons in town were notified by Lauri Rysavy, Michigan mayor, that they should pick up their mail in Petersburg, North Dakota, 6 miles east of Michigan. The hours of the Petersburg Post Office have been extended from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. to 7 a.m. to 2 p.m to better accommodate the Michigan customers.

On Monday, Jan. 6, the Michigan Fire Department texted the oxygen levels in the Michigan Post Office, and they were normal. A local plumber also checked the stack pipe for pinholes and found none. At that time, there was no odor in the post office, Rysavy said.

However, on Saturday, Jan. 13, the Michigan postmaster said the odor had returned and was even stronger than it had been previously, said James Boxrud, a U.S. Postal Service spokesman.

Within the next several days, a private company will conduct a test on the post office's indoor air quality, Boxrud said. The post office won’t open until the results of that investigation are known.

“The postmaster is concerned about the safety of the customers,” he said.
