MADISON, Wis. -- Lorne Bowman (Detroit, Mich.) grew up a Michigan fan, his uncle played for the Wolverines, and he thought he might too someday.
But when Wisconsin came through with an offer for him on Nov. 2, 2018, he wasn't much thinking about any of that.
The 2020 Badger signee recently told Mick McCabe and the Detroit Free Press that once Wisconsin showed how much it was committed to him, it was easy to commit right back, shifting away from what was once his "dream school."
"I loved how much they were interested in me,” Bowman said, according to the Freep.com article. “Any kid that’s choosing a college would obviously want a college to be really interested in them.
A top talent in the state of Michigan, McCabe lays it out right there in the headline of his article, writing "here's how Michigan basketball lost a top Orchard Lake St. Mary's recruit to Wisconsin."
He goes on to explain, through Bowman's own words, that it was because the Badgers did their due diligence, made Bowman feel like a priority, and took time to get to know him off the court that he felt like it was the right fit.
So much a right fit, that Bowman also didn't feel the need to wait and see what a Wisconsin offer would do for his chances at one from Michigan. He committed to the Badgers two weeks after they offered.
“I was elated how they knew everything about me," Bowman told McCabe. "They knew my family, they knew where I came from. They just really put all the pieces together and recruited me.”
Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard showed that indeed was the case when he shared thoughts on each member of the incoming class after all five signed their national letter of intent in November.
"Lorne displays natural leadership, both by his extreme work ethic and also through his communication on and off the court," Gard said of Bowman. "Lorne and his family are a pleasure to be around and represent everything that being a Badger is about.”
What he brings on the court isn't half-bad, either.
"Lorne plays at his own pace, always under control, giving his team whatever it needs in the right moments with a skillset that can turn from scoring guard to playmaker in an instant," Gard added. "He has a great ability to get the ball where it needs to be and can also create shots with his tremendous pull-up game."
Bowman's decision to commit to Wisconsin shortly after the Badgers offered could have appeared rushed to many--especially considering he didn't wait to see what might happen with his home-state team.
But from well before he committed, through to his commitment, and to now, as he's made it official, Bowman has always been sure of the Badgers.
"I'm solid on it," Bowman told Badger247. "All the support from Wisconsin fans has been great. I haven't looked back on my decision one time. This is the place I need to be."
