EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Rite Aid is closing its store in East Syracuse in February, but village officials and some residents are trying to convince the company to keep it open.
The Rite Aid at 300 W. Manlius St. in the heart of the village is set to close its pharmacy Feb. 10, and the store Feb. 25, store employees said.
East Syracuse Village Mayor Robert Tackman said he’s been in contact with corporate officials to see if there’s anything that can be done to keep the store open.
Walgreens bought the Rite-Aid store and then subsequently decided to close it, the mayor said.
Tackman said he’s not sure anything can be done to prevent the closure, but he’s called on residents to contact Walgreen officials at 1-877-250-5823 to voice their concerns.
"We would really like it to stay open,'' he said.
Tackman said the drugstore has been a fixture in the village for at least 15 years, and residents depend on it for their prescriptions and other items. For many residents, it’s more difficult to get to the Wegmans on James Street or the Rite Aid in Kirkville - the closest pharmacies.
In 2018, Walgreens completed its purchase of 1,932 Rite Aid stores, including several in Syracuse. One of those was the Rite Aid on South Salina Street, which had been in operation for more than 40 years and closed in October 2018.
Walgreens officials could not be reached for immediate comment.
